SCM Ti105 Nova Tilting Spindle Moulder

The SCM Ti105 Nova is a professional-grade tilting spindle moulder manufactured by SCM Group. This machine is part of SCM's Nova range, which represents their standard line of professional joinery machines designed for small to medium-sized woodworking operations. The Ti105 model specifically features a tilting spindle mechanism that allows for more versatile cutting angles and profile options compared to fixed-spindle machines.

The Ti105 Nova is primarily designed for shaping and profiling wooden components, making it an essential tool for joinery workshops, furniture manufacturers, cabinet makers, and custom woodworking shops. The machine's backward-tilting spindle capability (0° to 45°) enables craftspeople to create complex profiles and joints that would be difficult or impossible to achieve with standard vertical spindle moulders.

The Ti105 Nova is designed for both standard moulding operations and high-precision slot and tenoning work when equipped with appropriate accessories. This versatility makes it suitable for a wide range of applications from simple edge profiles to complex joinery tasks.

The machine combines robust construction with precise control mechanisms, featuring a solid cast iron spindle column for stability during operation. All adjustments can be made from the front of the machine, enhancing operator convenience and efficiency. The Ti105 Nova represents an intermediate position in SCM's spindle moulder range, offering professional capabilities at a more accessible price point than their premium L'invincibile series while providing more features and capacity than their entry-level Minimax models.

Technical Specifications

Spindle Specifications

The SCM Ti105 Nova features a tilting spindle with a range from 0° to 45° degrees, allowing for versatile cutting angles. This backward-tilting capability enables complex profiling operations that would be difficult with a standard fixed-spindle machine. The spindle has a useful length of 127 mm (5 inches), providing adequate space for mounting various tooling configurations.

The standard machine comes with a 30 mm diameter spindle shaft, though 35 mm, 40 mm, and 50 mm options are available depending on regional specifications and optional configurations. The projection of the shaft base from the table is 2 mm in standard configuration, while with the interchangeable shaft option, this increases to 38 mm.

One of the notable features is the large spindle moulder column made entirely of cast iron, which provides maximum stability and rigidity under all working conditions, reducing vibration and ensuring precise cutting operations.

Motor and Power Specifications

The standard Ti105 Nova comes equipped with a 5.0 kW (7.0 HP) motor operating in S6 mode, which refers to a continuous duty cycle with intermittent loading. This provides sufficient power for most standard profiling operations. For more demanding applications, an optional upgrade to a 7.0 kW (9.5 HP) motor with automatic star/delta starting is available, particularly beneficial for workshops processing hardwoods or running the machine for extended periods.

The electrical specifications include both three-phase options, with the machine typically configured for the market in which it is sold. Safety features include magneto-thermic protection, a transformer for the 110V auxiliary circuit, and an automatic motor brake system that quickly stops the spindle rotation when the machine is powered off.

Spindle Speeds

The Ti105 Nova offers four standard operating speeds, making it versatile for various cutting operations. The spindle speed options are 4000, 7000, 9000, and 12000 rpm on 60Hz electrical systems. For machines operating on 50Hz systems, the speeds are 3500, 6000, 8000, and 10000 rpm.

These multiple speed settings are ideal for different operations, from heavy moulding work at lower speeds to fine finishing and small-diameter cutter work at higher speeds. When equipped with the tenoning attachment, the speed is electronically limited to 3500 rpm (50Hz) or 4000 rpm (60Hz) for safety reasons, due to the larger diameter of tenoning tools.

An electric visualizer displays the currently selected speed, ensuring the operator is always aware of the machine's operating parameters. The machine also features a spindle rotation reversal capability with an electric interlock for starting, adding versatility for specialized cutting operations.

Maximum Tool Capacities

The Ti105 Nova can accommodate profiling tools with a maximum diameter of 240 mm (9.5 inches) in the standard vertical position. When the spindle is tilted to 45 degrees, the maximum tool diameter is reduced to 150 mm x 80 mmdue to geometric constraints.

The machine is capable of using tools that retract under the table at 90° with a maximum diameter of 240 mm, facilitating flush cutting operations. When equipped with the tenoning attachment, the maximum tool diameter increases to 300 mm (12 inches) in CE-compliant configurations, or potentially larger in non-CE versions.

The spindle fence stroke with mechanical programming is 110 mm (ranging from -75 to +125 mm), allowing for precise adjustments to accommodate different tool diameters and cutting depths. This range provides significant flexibility for various profiling operations while maintaining proper tool guarding and workpiece support.
